Professor Michelle Khine has been appointed as the inaugural Ian and Pamela Wall Chair Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Adelaide.听
Professor Khine is a distinguished biomedical engineer, inventor and entrepreneur who has been Professor of Biomedical Engineering at University of California, Irvine since 2016.听
She is a pioneer in microfluidics - the science and technology of manipulating very small volumes of fluids - and developed platform technologies for rapid micro and nano-fabrication for applications including chemical analysis and drug screening. More recently, she has been pioneering next-generation soft electronics for continuous physiological monitoring and digital health. 听
The Ian and Pamela Wall Chair in Electrical and Electronic Engineering was established in 2023 as part of a generous $5 million dollar donation by South Australian philanthropist, Pamela Wall AO in honour of her late husband, Ian.听
鈥淗elping others has always been at the heart of what Ian and I believed in,鈥 said Pamela.听
鈥淚t is immensely satisfying to support Professor Khine to push the boundaries of her work as the Wall Chair Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.鈥
鈥淚 wish Michelle all the best in applying her immense skills and experience to tackle opportunities in electronics engineering.鈥澨
Ian Wall AM founded an innovative electronics company in the 1950s along with friends from the University of Adelaide. Pamela and Ian grew the company into electronics giant Codan which developed cutting-edge communications technology that is used around the world today.听
鈥淚t is a tremendous honour to be appointed the Wall Chair of Electrical Engineering at the University of Adelaide,鈥 said Professor Khine.听
鈥淭he Wall endowment represents more than recognition and support -- it symbolises hope. At a time when scientific funding faces uncertainty around the world, I鈥檓 especially grateful for the opportunity to pursue ambitious ideas at such a forward-thinking, future-focused institution.听听
鈥淧amela Wall鈥檚 investment affirms faith in discovery, innovation, and the next generation of thinkers. It gives me renewed optimism that curiosity, creativity, and altruism will continue to drive societal progress.鈥澨
Michelle will take up her position in July 2026 after the new Adelaide University opens its doors following the merger of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.听
鈥淚 congratulate Professor Khine for being appointed as the Wall Chair in Electrical and Electronic Engineering,鈥 said Professor Peter H酶j AC, Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Adelaide.听
鈥淧rofessor Khine will make a significant contribution to future research and education offerings at Adelaide University and will strengthen the University鈥檚 reputation as a globally recognised centre of excellence in electrical and electronic engineering.鈥澨
A serial entrepreneur, Professor Khine founded her first start-up company, Fluxion Biosciences, when she was a PhD student at UC Berkeley. She has founded six medical device/biotech companies to date, the last two companies with her PhD students.听听
She has been honoured multiple times including the TR35 Award by鈥疢IT Technology Review鈥痺hich is an annual award for young innovators whose work is shaping the future of technology. Professor Khine has also been named as one of Forbes鈥 鈥10 Revolutionaries鈥.听
Professor Khine is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), as well as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. She is also a passionate educator, serving as Founding Faculty at UC Merced and currently holds the leadership role of Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education at UC Irvine.听
